Angels rookie Mark Trumbo perks up (June 24, 2011)

As he slugs home runs and knocks in runs, Mark Trumbo has had little trouble adjusting to Major League life. One aspect, in particular, he enjoys.

Chivas scores twice in second half to beat San Jose (July 06, 2011)

At its worst, soccer is excruciatingly boring. At its best, the game can present strokes of beauty. Chivas USA displayed both aspects in its 2-0 victory over San Jose.

A compendium of corruption: Some of the notorious (and alleged) scandals in sports history (June 04, 2011)

FIFA President Sepp Blatter revived one of sports' greatest traditions, corruption, with his reelection. How far back does corruption in sports stretch? Well, how much time do you have?

NBA lockout strips team websites of player images (July 01, 2011)

When the NBA locked out its players, not only did games get cancelled, depriving fans of live action, but fans were also denied the chance to settle bar bets or watch highlights on team websites, as all resemblances of any players disappeared from the very first minute of the lockout.

Perk preserves draw in debut for Galaxy (July 04, 2011)

In his MLS debut, Galaxy goalkeeper Brian Perk needed to trust his most basic instincts in order to save Los Angeles from defeat. Left or right?

Chad Billingsley not giving Dodgers what they need (June 15, 2011)

Chad Billingsley's spring and early summer held such promise. Now, his last three starts have undone nearly all that goodwill as he struggles to find his groove.

Angels' Vernon Wells redeems himself with late homer against Dodgers (June 26, 2011)

Encapsulating the first half of his season in one game, Vernon Wells goes from goat to hero, all in a loss where his heroics were simply too little, too late.

Man City defeats Galaxy, 7-6 on penalty kicks (July 24, 2011)

Manchester City goalkeeper  Joe Hart did not simply endure nine rounds of a shootout, as the one shot at. Hart also provided the winning kick in the exhibition match.

Chivas USA earns 1-1 tie with Chicago Fire (July 02, 2011)

Chivas USA had lost three straight, so how did Dan Kennedy and Co. snap the losing streak? In soccer's favorite fashion: a 1-1 tie.

Before beginning my senior year at Notre Dame, I spent a summer in the Sports Department at The Los Angeles Times, thanks to the generosity of the Harry Ornest Family and the Ornest Fellowship.

Within a week of my arrival, I took over the duties as soccer beat writer for the summer. Though I lost many hours watching friends' soccer matches in high school and spent a season covering the Notre Dame women's soccer team, ending in a College Cup loss, I never considered myself a soccer expert. Safe to say, I learned the game quickly, and now typically choose an MLS match over a mid-August baseball game on TV.

Thus, many of the selected clips below tie to either the Los Angeles Galaxy, Chivas USA or both. The Times also kept me busy bouncing around Chavez Ravine, the X-Games and the other events of a typical southern California summer.
