Obituary: Darrell Gissendanner | Former Clairton High, Pitt basketball star (June 13, 2012)

Gissendanner won seven varsity letters at Clairton High School, as well as four more at Pitt, before trying out for the Steelers twice. He died June 8 in Utah. He was 53.

Following graduation from Notre Dame in the May of 2012, I headed east to Pittsburgh. A 10-week internship in the Sports Department of The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette awaited me.

 

As is to be expected at any quality newspaper internship, my time at The P-G produced clips of varying types. From tier-three soccer to the PGA Champions Tour to Steelers mini-camp, there was a bit of everything. Here is a sampling of that everything.

Pouncey, Rainey on same team again (June 15, 2012)

Fifth-round draft pick Chris Rainey rejoins his high school and college teammate Maurkice Pouncey in the Steelers running attack. Rainey's best seasons have come with the third-year center leading the way, both on and off the field.

New venue brings NHL Draft back to town (June 22, 2012)

Last held in Pittsburgh in 1997, a new and improved NHL Draft will be held in the new and improved Consol Center. Unlike other sports' drafts, the NHL Draft serves as the largest front office convention of the year.
