SENIOR THESIS: Yes, Socrates, There Is A Santa Claus: And Why Journalists, the Modern-Day Philosopher Kings, Are the Ones to Tell Us (March 2012)

As part of my major — the Program of Liberal Studies, based off the Great Books Seminars — I wrote a thesis my senior year. Combining my major with my journalism minor (Notre Dame does not offer journalism as a major), I weaved together the thought processes of Socrates, Alexis de Tocqueville and Joseph Pulitzer, among many others. As seemed to be the case with most of my classmates as well, the process of writing a thesis was a painful one, but I am glad to have done it, and thanks to combining my two academic passions, I even enjoyed much of what I read in my research.

Student Managers: The glue holding the Irish football team together (October  2010)

In the beginning of my junior year at Notre Dame, the Alumni Association approached me to handle some freelancing for their various magazines. Seeing a chance to expand my writing as well as reach an expansive network, er, audience, I jumped at the opportunity.

My first piece was to be a feature on the athletic programs' student managers. Scheduled to run in the November issue of Notre Dame Magazine, the piece never ran. Less than a week after I submitted it for editing, Declan Sullivan, both a personal friend and co-worker, died after the scissor-lift from which he was filming football practice fell. He was a student videographer for the football team.

In light of the tragedy, Notre Dame Magazine opted not to run the piece, a decision I then and now completely understand.

The Coaches: Winning Championships from Rockne to Holtz (Oct. 13, 2012)

A few months after graduating, Notre Dame offered me the opportunity to pen an essay to be included as an insert in a game program as part of the celebration of the University's 125th year of football.

In those 125 years, five coaches led the Irish to 11 consensus national championships. Of their 52 combined seasons, 11 left indelible marks on the Notre Dame legacy. From Rockne to Holtz, common traits, tactics and traditions tied the national champions to each other.

This particular essay accompanied the game program for the Oct. 13, 2012 tilt against Stanford, which Notre Dame won 20-13 in overtime with a memorable goal line stand.

Past coaches prepared Nájera for future on bench  (Aug. 16,  2012)

Simultaneously announcing his retirement and his foray into the coaching ranks as the head coach of the D-League's Texas Legends, certain things will change for Eduardo Nájera. Others will not.
