The Coaches: Winning Championships from Rockne to Holtz (October 13, 2012)

A few months after graduating, Notre Dame offered me the opportunity to pen an

essay to be included as an insert in a game program as part of the celebration of the

     University's 125th year of football.

In those 125 years, five coaches led the Irish to 11 consensus national championships.

Of their 52 combined seasons, 11 left indelible marks on the Notre Dame legacy. From

Rockne to Holtz, common traits, tactics and traditions tied the national champions to

     each other.

This particular essay accompanied the game program for the Oct. 13, 2012 tilt against

Stanford, which Notre Dame won 20-13 in overtime with a memorable goal line stand.
